My heart was galloping like a racehorse as my reflection in the mirror confirmed my worst fears. Nothing could quite prepare me for the shock of it.
All the preparation, mindset work and weeks of emotional resilience I had been building up in order to allow me to handle this situation, suddenly felt like it had been in vain.
As a naturally smiley person this was the stuff of nightmares. I looked even worse than I had imagined.
I caught a glimpse of my mother's pained and pitiful reaction as my eyes narrowed in judgement at my ugly reflection, all the while fighting back tears that threatened to betray my tough exterior. The ticktock of the white clock on the wall seemed unusually loud for a Friday afternoon at the orthodontist.
Fourteen years old and a year into high school with a mouth full of new metal braces and thanks to a freak accident six years earlier, I now had to go around without my false teeth.
At that moment I realised it did not matter how much I tried to hide it, play it down or make light of it, it was there for all to see. I was simply going to have to face the world like this for the next three years of my life and find a way to work with it.
The hardest part was Monday morning, psyching myself up for school. I was a bundle of nerves about the response I would receive. That was when my mother pulled me aside for an impromptu pep talk, explaining that this was a critical moment in life where I could make the choice to let it either make me or break me.
That I could rise above my circumstances and greet the world head on and not be controlled by fear. That the most important part of me was inside of me, my heart and who I was as a person and that most people would have compassion and accept me no matter how I looked.
It was a challenge she believed I could overcome.
So off I went, on what felt like the longest walk of my life, the whole time spent focused on building my mental fortitude to face what lay ahead. I decided resolutely that I would do everything in my power to let my heart shine through and make my personality so vibrant that in a matter of minutes people would soon forget about my toothless smile and simply focus on me as a person and how good they felt when they were around me.
If I could achieve this then I knew I could overcome anything.
That day ended up being one of my best days ever. I was the most radiant I had ever been and people accepted me as I was. Most importantly, I received a powerful gift from that experience which I would use again and again in life; the ability to rise above my circumstances by choice.

With running a vast empire and the obvious stresses, numerous duties and challenges that came with the position, the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt employed a sole Vizier.
The Vizier was responsible for all matters of daily life, from maintaining civil order, as well as overseeing special tasks and events and even investigating problems or discrepancies on behalf of their leader to ensuring the pharaoh's overall wellbeing on a daily basis.
Vizier's were viewed as the special advisor to the pharaoh and more often than not, this non-royal but prestigious position was bestowed upon a trusted family member in whom the pharaoh had great confidence.
Because of their power, Ancient Egyptian viziers, were expected to be law-abiding, impartial, and levelheaded. Hieroglyphs often depict the viziers wearing long, white robes; these symbolized their purity of heart and spirit.
As the Pharaoh of your personal empire, you now have the opportunity of working with your very own modern day Vizier, Dani Andersen, to help you powerfully transform and enhance your life and leadership to the highest levels possible in the same manner that was successfully utilised thousands of years ago.
